Demonstration evening with Tim Rose Oct 19th 2015

http://driffieldartclub.co.uk/demonstration-evening-with-tim-rose-oct-19th-2015/

Tim Rose gave an excellent demonstration of how to create a watercolour of an architectural street scene with figures. His mixes of colour and tonal values brought the painting to life using techniques such as negative painting behind the figures and blending washes of pinks and yellows, siennas and violets on the roads and buildings and for stronger shadows, adding blues and purples.

The finished work, a street in Sheffield town centre, had depth and interest – the focal point being the group of figures walking in the streets past the tram.

Workshop by John Naylor on Feb 6th 2015 at Nafferton Village Hall

John Naylor demonstrated his particular technique for painting wildlife in soft pastels using a Mallard duck as the subject.

The class of 12 Driffield Art Club Members all had a go at painting the same subject and the resuts can be seen below in the photographs below.

John talked abut his life and background in portrait painting at Butlins as a young man then, in later years, rearing wildlife including birds of prey, hares and other animals in order to paint them in as natural a setting as possible. He finished off the day with a beautiful painting of a pheasant from memory.

Demonstration Evenings at Driffield Art Club

Demonstration by Claire West on Jan 19th 2015

image flamingo

Claire West treated us to a very entertaining demonstration using acrylic paint and inks on a large canvas set on an easel.

Covering the canvas with many bright colours Claire then laid the canvas on the floor and invited members  of the audience to sprinkle inks onto it. Once dry she put the canvas back on the easel and started over-painting parts

of it with two flamingo bird designs. She showed us how she tackles this kind of abstract work through its various stages, thought processes and actions to get the unique effect which is her trademark.

Claire brought some more recent work along to show the art club members. One example is shown below the picture of Claire painting her flamingos.

Demonstration by Geoff Kersey on Feb 17th 2014

Geoff, who is from Matlock in Derbyshire, came to do a watercolour demonstration on Monday February 17th at Driffield Art Club.

The hall at the Community Centre at Westgarth on Mill Street in Driffield, where the Driffield Art Club hold their monthly meetings, was packed with members and visitors to watch the demonstration. They were not disappointed as Geoff demonstrated his techniques beginning by explaining which colours he uses and for what purpose. He had chosen to paint a scene from the Derbyshire Peak District in wintertime.

It was a Masterclass in the use of watercolours showing how to create light and atmosphere with good quality watercolours and brushes from the SAA.

Geoff has written many books on watercolour and oil painting and produced several DVDs on the subject.

Oil painting demonstration by Paul Blackwell on Oct 21st 2013

North Yorkshire Artist Paul Blackwell gave DAC members  a demonstration of oil landscapes on Monday 21st October at DAC’s monthly meeting.

Paul sketched a landscape in charcoal on a canvas in situ at Malham, in the Dales.

He took it back to his study and made some small colour sketches to work out how he wanted to approach the painting.

Although the sketch was quite detailed Paul began the demonstration by rubbing out most of the image with a clean cloth. There was enough of a sketch left on the canvas to guide the painting.

Paul laid various thin layers of oil – mixed with turps – to allow under painting colours to show through.

He explained that normally he would leave the oil to stand for several days to dry.

Driffield Art Club is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year!!

———-Visit to the SAA on May 20th 2015——–

On Wednesday May 20th Driffield Art Club were invited to an Open Day event at the Society for All Artists (SAA) at their headquarters at Newark. DAC is an affiliated member of the SAA.

Of the 31 members who came on the visit 26 members travelled in a coach organised by Janet Saxby which picked us up at various points en route from Driffield, Beverley and Walkington. The other 5 travelled by car.

The day was spent trying out a variety of media in the workshop room and enjoying demonstrations by Anita Pounder, the SAA in-house artist. We were able to take advantage of the range of items on sale at discounted prices around the room as well as ordering goods from the warehouse which were packed and ready for us to take home with us at the end of the day. We were given tour of the premises by the Managing Director Richard Hope-Hawkins and the membership co-ordinator Gemma Dixon taking in the large warehouse, offices and film studios. In the film studio a short film featuring our President, Mimi Claughton, Chair Joanne Blacker and Programme secretary Sally Haylock talking about DAC will be view on the available to view on the SAA Website.

We had a very enjoyable day and hope to make this an annual event in the future.

Following the trip an email from Gemma Dixon was sent to Mary Wells, who organised the trip as follows:

Dear Mary and fellow members of Driffield Art Club

I just wanted to thank all of your lovely members who came over to HQ here in Newark and spent the day with us on yesterday. We do hope each and every one of you enjoyed the day and left feeling inspired. It was our pleasure to meet you all and share with you our passion for art!

Whilst you were here our photographer took some photos during the day, and I thought you may like to see them. You may also like to upload them on to your website or SAA webpage. They are attached for you.

I would also like to thank those who took the time to give us some feedback on their day here. All feedback whether positive or negative is welcome so we know what is working well for you and what could be improved to better our service in the future! Any ideas or suggestions you may have, please do let us know.

Any problems please don’t hesitate to contact me direct by email gemma@saa.co.uk or by direct line 01636 643523.

Driffield Art Club Golden Jubilee Exhibition at the Triton Gallery.

Founded in 1965 the art club has gone from strength to strength over the years and is one of the largest of its type in the UK.
This dynamic club hosts a varied annual programme of events for its members including demonstrations and workshops by big names in the art world such as Geoff Kersey of Darley Dale, North Yorkshire.
To celebrate its long running success, the club’s President Mimi Claughton and Chairman Joanne Blacker have organised a Golden Jubilee Art Exhibition at the Triton Gallery as part of this year’s programme of events. Members of the public will be given an opportunity to talk to some of the artists and purchase unique artworks.
There will also be a display of information about the club and its history and a preview on the first day with homemade scones and cream.

The exhibition opens on Tuesday June 2nd and runs until Sunday June 14th. Daily opening times are from 10:30am – 3:30pm excluding Mondays.

Former member Mary James celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday April 12th by holding an open house for friends and family. Mary, a founder member of the art club, received a telegram from the Queen and was presented with 3 lemon, chocolate and blueberry birthday cakes, made by her son Chris.
