Anthony Barrow Demonstration night

Anthony Barrow Demonstration night

Another successful meeting!

This month’s Art Club Meeting was before a full house when the Artist and Lecturer Anthony Barrow of Wigan gave a fascinating demonstration of portrait painting using a total mix of almost every medium available.

His fun-loving attitude and freedom of style provided a highly entertaining evening for members and guests. A host of different techniques were absorbed by the assembly which will no doubt be seen in their future work.

Driffield Art Club’s Christmas meeting

Driffield Art Club’s Christmas meeting

Our Christmas party on Dec 12th was very eventful – first of all we had a very interesting talk about David Hockney by Rose Horspool then enjoyed a buffet brought by the membership.

A donation was made to the Children’s University Painting project by Dac and presented to Rose to pass on ( Rose does a lot of work with the Children’s University Charity at Hull University) then we all voted for our favourite piece of artwork from entries submitted by members – this Year’s theme was ‘Florally Inspired’ and the winner was Kay Jones pictured here being presented with the Bobbie Simmons Memorial trophy by our President Cath Inglis.

On Monday 19th September 2016 at Driffield Art Club’s first monthly meeting of the new art club calendar year we were pleased to introduce Keith Britton, a photographer and Science teacher from Hedon in East Yorkshire who showed  us a selection of his fascinating and very skilful work.

Keith is working on several projects including capturing the tide coming in. This involves using a long exposure to smooth out the waves in the sea or soften the flow of a river.

Keith’s work can be viewed at https://500px.com/kbr61263

Bruce Mulcahy’s demonstration evening

Bruce Mulcahy’s demonstration evening

Bruce Mulcahy did a wonderful demonstration for us at our May meeting. Using oils on daler board he gave us a Masterclass in a ‘one sitting’ painting, blocking in the darker and mid tones first in browns then adding lighter and darker tones to depict the cliffs and sea colours. Earlier that day Bruce had travelled to the coast at Flamboro from West Yorkshire to take some photographic references for his painting. he had then travelled back to Wakefield to take his art class before setting off to Driffield to do the demonstration for us! Quite a feat in itself.

The resulting painting was stunning.

Monday 21st September saw the Annual General Meeting of Driffield Art Club. There was a very good turnout.

After the meeting Robin Horspool gave a critique to the members who had brought work. There were many paintings to get through and Robin gave some valuable insights into the way these had been produced.

Joanne Blacker (Chair) gave the vote of thanks and the meeting ended at 9:15pm.

Workshop by John Naylor on Feb 6th 2015 at Nafferton Village Hall

John Naylor demonstrated his particular technique for painting wildlife in soft pastels using a Mallard duck as the subject.

The class of 12 Driffield Art Club Members all had a go at painting the same subject and the resuts can be seen below in the photographs below.

John talked abut his life and background in portrait painting at Butlins as a young man then, in later years, rearing wildlife including birds of prey, hares and other animals in order to paint them in as natural a setting as possible. He finished off the day with a beautiful painting of a pheasant from memory.
