Mary Wells, Chair of Driffield Art Club

Chair of Driffield Art Club from 19/9/16

Vice Chair of East Riding Artists Ltd.

About me

I have loved drawing and painting from a very young age and graduated from Hull School of Art in the late 70s after studying graphic design, illustration, typography and photography.

My first love is figure drawing and painting but I really like trying my hand at anything that catches my imagination, always seeking to capture the essence of the subject of my artwork.

I mainly work in soft pastels and since 2013 have been invited to many  art clubs and societies to carry out demonstrations and workshops for their members. Most recently I did a workshop in Epworth, Lincolnshire where I used one of my photographs of Flamboro North Landing to demonstrate creating a coastal scene using soft pastels.

My commissions in the past few years have ranged from seascapes to farmland and landscapes, formal portraits to studies of children and pets. One of my favourite pieces of work  has been painting characters from the past 100 years to the present date onto a wall mural at Edinburgh Street Community Centre off Hessle Road in Hull. This mural has been very popular and had many visitors and a lot of media attention.

I offer weekly DAPPAs (‘Drawing and Painting for Pleasure Artists’) classes at Walkington Methodist Church Hall.

Wednesday classes are 10 – 12:30pm

Thursday classes are from 1:30pm till 4:00pm
