Hector Fraser

13th May 1919 – 13th April 2013

Hector, who died in April 2013, was the much loved, admired and respected President of Driffield Art Club. He was a founding member back in 1965 when the Club was first launched.

Hector worked in a variety of media – watercolour, oil, gouache, pastel, acrylic and clay sculpting.  He taught in Further Education and gave demonstrations to art groups.  He was also a judge in many art competitions and exhibitions.

Hector was full of enthusiasm for painting and encouraged everyone who was interested in any form of art.  He started Driffield Art Club’s monthly Saturday Workshops at Nafferton many years ago and in the ‘Self Help’ sessions would willingly impart his experience and expertise, helping all participants to achieve their potential.

At the club’s monthly Demonstrations, his votes of thanks were always erudite and appreciative of the Guest Artist’s abilities, with humour and delight.

A final exhibition of Hector’s artwork, over 40 pictures, plus a couple by his wife Judy, took place at the well known local art gallery ‘The Richard Burton Art Centre’ at Buckton near Bridlington in East Yorkshire from June 26th until July 7th 2013. Hector’s family organised the exhibition following discussions with Hector during his final illness early this year.

Richard Burton very kindly allowed the family to use his gallery free of charge to ensure that every penny of the funds raised from the sale of artworks goes to support the ‘Judy and Hector Agricultural Trust Fund’ held by the Driffield Rotary club.  The fund is used to support students studying farming.  A wonderful legacy from Hector, a former farmer and a good friend of East Yorkshire.
