Following on from Phil White’s portrait demonstration given on the 18 February 2019, here are a few photos capturing the final stages of his demonstration piece. Painted from a photo reference with acrylic paint, it was fascinating to see how the portrait evolved over the course of the evening with the addition of light and dark tones and the skillful use of various brushes, tools and application techniques.
Also during the demonstration, the tricky business of painting smiling people was discussed. How, if not vigilant, a few wayward brush strokes can transform a once happy natural smile into a slightly awkward grimace – much in the same way as when a smiling pose for the camera is held just a little too long and the moment is lost. Phil caught this smile perfectly.
