About Driffield Art Club’s Annual Exhibition

This prestigious art event takes place each year and over time trophies have been given to the club by sponsors and these are awarded to the artists whose artwork is chosen by the guest artist and judge, in this case Rose Horspool.

The exhibition is an opportunity for artists who are members of  Driffield Art Club to showcase and sell their work.

Preview evening Monday 10th October 7 – 9 pm

Guests were given light refreshments and enjoyed a private viewing of the artwork.

A short introduction by Mary Wells, the newly elected Chairperson was followed by the announcement and presentation of trophies and awards by Mimi Claughton, outgoing President of the club and special Guest Artist and Judge Rose Horspool.

Mimi welcomed Driffield Art Club’s incoming President Cath Inglis – Cath is a professional pastel from East Yorkshire and sometime member of Dac who has exhibited, amongst other places,  at the Mall Galleries in London and won several awards there. Bruce Mulcahy’s demonstration evening

Bruce Mulcahy’s demonstration evening

Bruce Mulcahy did a wonderful demonstration for us at our May meeting. Using oils on daler board he gave us a Masterclass in a ‘one sitting’ painting, blocking in the darker and mid tones first in browns then adding lighter and darker tones to depict the cliffs and sea colours. Earlier that day Bruce had travelled to the coast at Flamboro from West Yorkshire to take some photographic references for his painting. he had then travelled back to Wakefield to take his art class before setting off to Driffield to do the demonstration for us! Quite a feat in itself.

The resulting painting was stunning.

Demonstration evening with Tim Rose Oct 19th 2015

Demonstration evening with Tim Rose Oct 19th 2015

Tim Rose gave an excellent demonstration of how to create a watercolour of an architectural street scene with figures. His mixes of colour and tonal values brought the painting to life using techniques such as negative painting behind the figures and blending washes of pinks and yellows, siennas and violets on the roads and buildings and for stronger shadows, adding blues and purples.

The finished work, a street in Sheffield town centre, had depth and interest – the focal point being the group of figures walking in the streets past the tram.
